SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, BLUE KITCHEN

These first time homeowners loved the history of their home, but not the dated kitchen with its failing finishes and a lack of counter space, storage, and comfort. To gain more space without modifying the wall layout or overall size of the kitchen, we extended the upper cabinets up to the generous ceiling height and rotated the layout to take advantage of the long wall under the windows for new counter space. The tall, boldy colored upper cabinets draw the eye up, and there is so much more storage now that it feels like the kitchen has almost doubled in size and increased in height. Now a functional space, the chimney area is flanked by tall pantry cabinets and has become an anchor for the new dining table which could not fit comfortably in the previous layout.

During demolition, we uncovered original beams that became a feature and an interesting juxtaposition with the updated finishes.  We nodded to the previous wainscoting detail by including a vertical slat feature at the dining area and at the panel at the end of the cabinet run below the windows, which also gently evokes a mid century modern feel, appealing to the homeowners' style. The new wide plank rough white oak flooring also calls back to the home's history and adds visual warmth to the space. We love the combination of historical and modern elements that make this kitchen something old, something new, and something blue!
