ENERGIZED KITCHEN, BATH, + MORE
ENERGIZED KITCHEN, BATH, + MORE
FRANKLIN, MA
How did we rework a kitchen, bathroom, and rear catch-all room in this Franklin home to reflect the vibrant, thoughtful, artistic, and outgoing nature of its homeowners? With color, texture, pattern, and fun! All three spaces were in desperate need of an update. Not only were the finishes and fixtures uninspiring, they were in disrepair. We knew the homeowners loved cooking, travel, art, and color and these spaces did not represent them in the least. We made big changes in small spaces to align their environment with their lifestyle. We altered the layout of the kitchen and opened it up to an adjacent sitting room to create a peninsula so the whole family could finally be together in the kitchen all at once. Additional storage space and circulation were gained by eliminating an abandoned chimney and borrowing some unused area from the bathroom. Deep blue cabinetry and a combination of natural stone and wood for the counters provide visual warmth, and a textured but neutral wall tile and colorful accent paint provide interest, but still allows their art and accessories be showcased. We also included a large wall space with accent lighting so plenty of artwork could be enjoyed in the kitchen, as it is in most of the rest of their home. Replacing the double hung windows above the sink with casements helped bring in more sunlight without having to increase the size of the opening. The kitchen is not a voluminous space but it no longer feels small and confining. To bring energy into the laundry/pantry area and the full bathroom, we used brightly colored and patterned floor covering and wallcovering respectively. New built-in wall shelving adjacent to the kitchen created a much needed pantry area and the bathroom has gone from an uninspired space to a feast for the eyes with its pattern, texture, and vivid colors.
